Bachelor thesis proposal Analysing directed covert attention in Brain Computer Interfaces

چکیده
One way of measuring brain activity is a method called EEG (electroencephalogram). This is a non-invasive procedure that depends on the electric currents generated inside the brain. These minute currents and in particular the differences in currents throughout the brain at a particular moment in time are good predictors of brain activity. A BCI experiment performed at the university of Berlin involved 8 healthy subjects, they were given the task to direct their attention to one of six specific locations. This particular location was indicated with a cue, after that moment the test subjects covertly directed their attention to the place where the cue had occurred. Important was that they had to keep their eyes fixed in the center of the screen. So even though a cue appeared, only their covert attention was focused to that location and not their eye-gaze[10]. This way, motoric actions (moving eyes) did not disrupt the brain signal related to covert attention.

Covert visuospatial attention orienting in a brain-computer interface for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients.
BACKGROUND Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) allow people to control devices by translating brain signals into commands. BCIs represent a concrete solution with regard to communication and motor control disabilities of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Most of the BCIs rely on visual interfaces in which patients must move their eyes to achieve efficient BCI control. This fact re...
متن کاملCovert attention allows for continuous control of brain-computer interfaces.
While brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) can be used for controlling external devices, they also hold the promise of providing a new tool for studying the working brain. In this study we investigated whether modulations of brain activity by changes in covert attention can be used as a continuous control signal for BCI. Covert attention is the act of mentally focusing on a peripheral sensory stimu...
متن کاملGaze-independent brain-computer interfaces based on covert attention and feature attention.
There is evidence that conventional visual brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) based on event-related potentials cannot be operated efficiently when eye movements are not allowed. To overcome this limitation, the aim of this study was to develop a visual speller that does not require eye movements. Three different variants of a two-stage visual speller based on covert spatial attention and non-spa...
متن کاملDecoding covert spatial attention using electrocorticographic (ECoG) signals in humans
This study shows that electrocorticographic (ECoG) signals recorded from the surface of the brain provide detailed information about shifting of visual attention and its directional orientation in humans. ECoG allows for the identification of the cortical areas and time periods that hold the most information about covert attentional shifts. Our results suggest a transient distributed fronto-par...
